The fifth historical plaque is an update to the marble plaque of 1989 in Piazza del Mercato, at number 16. In fact, here lived all the German commanders who succeded one another during the occupation (September 12 – January 22). After the landing it was chosen as accomodation and offices for General John P. Lucas and his staff of 6th Corps. It was General Lawrence B. Keiser, Lucas’ Chief of Staff, to chose it. The villa had a little garden with two palm trees and belonged to Domenico Combi, who had been mayor of Nettuno in 1870 and to his son Angelo, also mayor of Nettuno in 1893, who inheritated it from his father. One of the descendant, Laura, furnished it after WWII as a guesthouse marked by a neon sign “Pensione Villa delle Palme” overlooking the entrance gate. General John P. Lucas lived, therefore, at the same place were the last German commander lived when, on the night before the landing, was urged by the German engineer, Lt. Siegmund Seiler, to get up from the table, leaving the leftovers of the last Nettuno dinner: a piece of sausage and half glass of white wine, just sipped. The German commanders who followed one another from 12 September 1943 to 22 January 1944, were more than ten: Schäffer, Nuack, Querbach, Scholl, Schuster, Hass H., Teriung, King, Schadach, Richter and three others.
