The third historical plaque can be found below the building in Piazza Mazzini, where the headquarters of the Italian Guardia di Finanza is now located. This structure was built in 1902 to house the military garrison and the accomodations for the officers of the Italian artillery school, which still continues its exercises inside the shooting range, opened a few years earlier in 1888. Since the 1980s, the apartments of the officers were moved inside the military shooting range. Since the day of occupation (September 12th, 1943), the Germans established here their headquarters. Permission to circulate were issued in this building. The stables behind were used as jails for all those who did not obey the evacuation orders: the first one issued on September 23rd, and repeated on 2nd and 12th October, with death penalty for those who did not move away to five kilometers from the coast. Another order was reiterated in October 25th.
