On 23rd January, 1944 elements of the 1sr Armored Division, 6th Corps, 5th Army, landed on X Ray Beach in Nettuno as part of Operation Shingle. German reiforcements stalled the advance and a stalemate persisted until mid-May. The 1st Armored Division led the Allied breakout from the beachhead on 23 May and were part of the liberation force who entered Rome on 4 June. During the five months of the Anzio/Nettuno Campaign, the Allied 6th Corps suffered more than 29,200 combat cassualties.
This plaque is dedicated to the valor, bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers of the 1st Armored Division “Old Ironside”.
